IE University - Inauguration Ceremony

Boris Nowalski
IE University - Inauguration Ceremony

IE Business School entered the world of university education in January 2007 when it acquired IE University, a sophisticated, innovative, international institution committed to the business elite with a global outlook, entrepreneurial flair and a public-spirited nature. The fact that it is the first time a business school has purchased a university means that its students have an enterprising, business spirit which is lacking in universities in general.

IE University expands IE Business School’s international educational model to undergraduate and postgraduate studies, thus creating a unique space for higher education in Europe. IE University stands for a new model of university education based on the diffusion of knowledge and innovation among the leaders of tomorrow.

IE University offers an exclusive program including subjects from the fields of science and humanities. Degrees can be taken in Architecture (English and Spanish), Communication (English and Spanish), Construction Management, Journalism, Psychology, Telecommunication Engineering, History of Art, Tourism and Biology. Postgraduate studies offered by the university will include master’s degrees in Security Management, Communication Management in Social Networks and Work Space Design.

IE University currently has approximately 1,200 students and 170 professors. Student numbers for the new university are expected to reach 2,000 in five years, with 80% of these being international students.

Zaryn Dentzel, founder and CEO of leading Spanish social networking site Tuenti, gave the keynote address to recent graduates and new students at IE University, Segovia, during the inauguration ceremony for the academic year 2008-2009. opening speach

Chris Andersen’s Wired post really made me think. What exactly these days constitutes free? In my honest opinion, everything has a price, whether are not you are paying it directly or not.

It cannot be denied, the web is in a sense a commercialized gateway to the entire world. If you take the ability to make money off the world wide web, it falls apart. While many of us use services like Google or Gmail daily for free, SOMEONE out there in cyberspace is paying for our usage. It is the advertisers on Google that make it successful. If there are no advertisements, there is no income, and if there is no income, there is no money. If they have no money they can’t operate, and Google is dead. It isn’t free to run that company, their computing and intellectual resources cost millions of dollars yearly.

Google is a fantastic example. Likely millions of people use it daily, yet no one pays for the right to use it. For us, it is free, but that is just a benefit most of us take for granted in this Web 2.0 world we live in. We as a society need online commerce and business just as much as the companies who run the sites need it to reach their financial goals, because really these sites MAKE the world wide web what it is today.

The Europeanization of Kosovo

NATO membership action plans for Georgia and Ukraine and the Russia’s financial troubles may get the media attention, but one of the great silent stories: the integration of Kosovo into Europe. Of course all these stories overlap, and each is accelerated by Russia’s invasion of Georgia.

The rule of law mission in Kosovo has been a great success of European-American friendship. Kosovo is on track to join the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and even is going to privatize a local telecommunications firm.

Meanwhile, Vojvodina is seeking greater autonomy from Serbia, though Kosovar soccer just took a setback.

The United Kingdom is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy comprising four constituent countries — England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales — with Elizabeth II as head of state, who is also head of state of the Commonwealth realms. The Crown Dependencies of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, formally possessions of the Crown, are not part of the UK but form a federacy with it.[13] The UK has fourteen overseas territories,[14] all remnants of the British Empire, which at its height encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land surface. It is a developed country, with the fifth-largest economy in the world by nominal GDP.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is in Western Europe. It comprises the island of Great Britain (most of England, Scotland and Wales) and the north-eastern one-sixth of the island of Ireland (Northern Ireland), together with many smaller islands. The mainland areas lie between latitudes 49° and 59° N (the Shetland Islands reach to nearly 61° N), and longitudes 8° W to 2° E. The Royal Greenwich Observatory, near London, is the defining point of the Prime Meridian. The United Kingdom has a total area of approximately 245,000 square kilometres (94,600 sq mi). The UK lies between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, and comes within 35 kilometres (22 mi) of the north-west coast of France, from which it is separated by the English Channel. Northern Ireland shares a 360 kilometres (224 mi) land boundary with the Republic of Ireland. The Channel Tunnel ("Chunnel") now links the UK with France beneath the English Channel

Wenchuan Earthquake

Nature has not been good to Wenchuan: Last year there were some rock slides and now it was hit by the strongest earth quake that has hit China for more than 30 years. According to Xinhua the epicenter was some 90 kilometers northwest of Chengdu, Sichuan’s province capital, and Chinese news agency Xinhua has called the natural disaster “汶川地震” (Wenchuan earth quake).

Last year on my way from Jiuzhaigou to Chengdu I passed Wenchuan and Dujiangyan, those two cities largely effected by the quake. As a matter of fact, when taking the 12 hour bus ride from Jiuzhaigou to the provincial capital, I met a student from Wenchuan who was just coming back from Jiuzhai to Wenchuan as her college was closed before because it had been hit by a landslide. For some pictures taken after the quake, see here.

livesafely.

Our economic system is inherently designed to create wealth for lenders by creating consumer debt. Problem is, that personal debts are at record levels, so much so that most of us will spend the rest of our lives being enslaved by it. Fresh out of high school, young adults are being solicited credit cards as if they were “free money”. Fact is, that with wages that have been stagnant for decades, people have been going into credit card debt to top up wages, just to keep up with the rising cost of living. In our over-credentialized society, we basically need a university degree to qualify for jobs that we could have gotten decades ago with merely a high school diploma. So, the problem is that people are faced with either working for minimum wages or going into debt to obtain a degree, just to have a middle class standard of living. University and college is set purposefully set up to be the only escape from a life of poverty. Unless young people are lucky enough to have affluent parents, getting student loans is the only path to getting the education they need. Student loan debt is effectively taking away the buying power of a whole generation.

Getting a university degree is the minimum necessity for entry into middle class life today, but the security that once came with that status is long gone. According to one study, the “Generation X” (of which I am one), now 25 to 40 years old, work almost three hours more per week than young baby boomers did way back in 1977. And all of those extra work hours aren’t adding up to enough additional earnings to cover the liability of student loan debts. Compared to 1980, the median earnings for a young worker 25 to 34 yrs old with a bachelor’s degree or higher were only 6.6 percent higher in 2004. During the same time period, student loan debt has more than doubled!

There are many things one can do to deal with student loan debt, such as typical debt strategies, like building a “debt snowball”. However it is an option that is difficult for those just starting out in a new profession as they may not have the earnings one needs to do this. Fortunately, there are other options, such as Federal student loan consolidation, loan reduction programs, consumer proposals and bankruptcy. We can look at some possible angles to help you deal with student loan debt, first in the USA, and then in Canada. The best plan is Federal student loan consolidation.

You Student Loan is with Sallie Mae

"If you don't like that arrangement, there are other alternatives," said Sheldon E. Steinbach, a higher-education attorney in the Washington office of the law firm Dow Lohnes. "This is not the only means to securing private loans. If that is what they are offering, students can look for a better deal. There are plenty of those out there."
Both articles did have a few view points in common, such as the facts of the new policy that Sallie Mae is incorporating. Each article started off with a light hearted joke as well. The Times gave a good example of opposite view points on the topic and gave the reader a chance to re-think about taking out a loan with Sallie Mae. The Post also had its positive outlook on the new payment plan and gave a detailed account of what Sallie Mae plans to do.

However, each article lacked something as important as informing its readers of different alternatives to loans.

In an article from the Flint Journal, "Cornerstone University plans fast-track, three-year degrees in journalism, business," describes a new three-year program to help students graduate quicker, thus saving more money and having to take out fewer loans.

Along with not informing the reader about alternative options, both authors failed to mention anything that President Obama has said about student loans.

In an article on FoxNews.com, "Obama would spend more to make college affordable," it discusses the plans that Obama has in order to increase Pell grants for colleges.

President Obama also stressed the importance of banks not being allowed to make profits off student loans in an article published in the Politico, "Pot takes center stage at town hall."

When comparing the Washington Post's article to the Washington Times article, it shows evidence of the Times giving the reader more view points to consider. Newspapers are not supposed to tell us what to think, like the Post seemed to be doing, but they are supposed to give us ideas and concepts to think about, and that's exactly what the Times did with their coverage.

Tuition Payment Plans
Tuition payment plans are short-term installment plans that split your tuition into equal monthly payments.

School-Specific Scholarships and Fellowships
Scholarship and fellowship programs offered only at specific schools, including college-controlled merit scholarships.

College Partnerships
Partnerships between certain community colleges and four-year colleges make it easier for students to transfer from a community college into a four-year college. Studying for two years at a community college can save the student a significant amount of money.

Other Types of Aid

In addition to the primary sources of financial aid (loans and scholarships), other kinds of aid are available to many students. These other types of aid fall into eight broad categories:

  1. Free Scholarship Lotteries
  2. Federal and State Government Aid
  3. College-Controlled Aid
  4. Student Profile-Based Aid
  5. Aid for Graduate and Professional School
  6. Aid for Elementary and Secondary School
  7. Aid for Specific Activities
  8. Innovative Programs

Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships are forms of aid that help students pay for their education. Unlike student loans, scholarships and fellowships do not have to be repaid. Hundreds of thousands of scholarships and fellowships from several thousand sponsors are awarded each year.

Best Ways to Find Money

1. FastWeb Scholarship Search
2. Local Public Library
3. Local College's Aid Office

Generally, scholarships and fellowships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, who are members of underrepresented groups, who live in certain areas of the country or who demonstrate financial need.

FastWeb The best way to search for scholarships and fellowships is to use a personalized search, like the FastWeb scholarship search, that compares your background with a database of awards. Only those awards that fit your profile are identified as matches.

There are several free scholarship databases available online. With more than 1.5 million scholarships worth more than $3.4 billion, the FastWeb scholarship search is the largest, most accurate and most frequently updated scholarship database. If you supply an email address, they will notify you when new awards that match your profile are added to the database. You can even submit an electronic application to some of the scholarships listed in the FastWeb scholarship database, saving you time and money. FastWeb also includes a college search and numerous other student resources.

November is

National
Scholarship
Month!

In addition to the FastWeb scholarship search, you may want to search one of the other free scholarship search sites. It doesn't take much time to search and it's free. To find small local awards that aren't listed in any book or database, look for notices posted on bulletin boards at your school's guidance office, the public library and outside the financial aid office at nearby colleges and universities.

You can also search for scholarships using your favorite web search engine by including the word "scholarships" with your search keywords.

College alumni and other private scholarship sponsors occasionally establish scholarships with esoteric eligibility requirements, such as a scholarship for left-handed students. Although there aren't many of these unusual scholarships, they often attract a lot of attention because of their slightly offbeat nature.

The most prestigious scholarships and fellowships also attract a lot of attention because they are among the most lucrative and competitive awards. Many colleges also offer full tuition academic scholarships.

Average students often ask whether there are any scholarships available to students who don't have a 4.0 GPA. There are many scholarships for average students that focus on qualities besides academic merit. There are also many community service scholarships.

Most scholarship search sites do not allow children under age 13 to register because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Unfortunately, this prevents parents from finding out about scholarships for students under age 13. FinAid has compiled a comprehensive list of college scholarships for students under age 13 and in grades K-8.

Don't waste your money on fee-based scholarship matching services. You won't get any better information than you can get from the free services available on the Web.

Once you've identified the scholarships for which you are eligible, FinAid has many good suggestions on how to maximize your chances of winning a scholarship.

Scholarships that sound too good to be true usually are. Learn how to recognize and protect yourself from the most common scholarship scams. The number one tip: If you have to pay money to get money, it's probably a scam.

It is important to ask the school's financial aid office about its outside scholarship policy, since this can affect how much you benefit from winning a scholarship if you are receiving need-based student aid.

A portion of your scholarship might be taxable. Usually amounts used for tuition and required fees are tax-free, but you should review the rules to ensure that you report the scholarship correctly.

The most reliable information about the number and amount of scholarships can be found in the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS), a statistically representative survey of undergraduate and graduate students conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) at the US Department of Education. FinAid also presents an analysis of the number of scholarships in the major scholarship databases, reporting the precision and recall of each database.

Students who are awarded scholarships often need additional financial assistance. See the Loans section for information on student and parent loans. To find out about contest, grants and other aid options, visit the section discussing Other Types of Aid. The Other Types of Aid section also provides information about scholarships for students with specific interests or abilities.

Businesses and philanthropists who are thinking about sponsoring a new scholarship may find the Scholarship Design & Management section helpful.

Australian Student Visa

The Australian Government operates an Overseas Student Program (OSP) that allows people who are not Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents to study in Australia.

Any person who is not an Australian resident may apply to study in Australia under the OSP.

A person who wants to study under the program must obtain a Australian student visa before they can commence a course of study in Australia.

You can be granted a student visa only if you wish to undertake a registered course or part of a registered course on a full-time basis.

A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider who is registered with the Australian Government to offer courses to overseas students.

The Australian education system is divided broadly into four levels of schooling:

  1. primary;
  2. secondary;
  3. vocational education; and
  4. training and higher education.

However, there are also other options available to students from other countries wishing to undertake study in Australia, such as English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and non-award courses.

Assessment levels

On 1 July 2001, the gazetted/non-gazetted country regime was replaced by an assessment level regime.

Different assessment levels within each of the student visa subclasses determine eligibility for a student visa, by establishing the threshold requirements that an applicant must meet in order to be granted a student visa.

The assessment levels are prescribed according to the passport held and the education sector of study. For more information, see Country Assessment Levels table* - PDF file, 11KB.

The country/sector assessment levels assigned have been based upon objective criteria and objective data regarding the compliance of students from different countries and in different education sectors.

Assessment level 1 represents the lowest assessment level and assessment level 5 the highest.

The higher the assessment level, the greater the minimum evidentiary standards an Australian student visa applicant has to satisfy in respect of criteria relating to financial capacity, English proficiency and other relevant matters.

Assessment level 3, 4 and 5 applicants must make their initial student visa application while they are outside of Australia.
