As part of the continuing celebration of the University of the Philippines' Centenary, the UP Vargas Museum hosts Paz Tanjuaquio's artist talk and free dance workshop on 18 February 2008. Tanjuaquio is a choreographer who is co-founder and artistic director of TOPAZ ARTS, Inc., a contemporary dance company based in the United States and established in 2000 with composer Todd Richmond. With a BA in Visual Arts from the University of California and an MFA in Dance from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Tanjuaquio integrates choreography and visual art with Richmond's original music and film. The result is a seamless collaboration of movement, music and images that is "intelligently conceived, image-filled" according to the New York Times.

For the Artist Talk "Dance and Film," Tanjuaquio will present TOPAZ ARTS' recent work on film and introduce their approach in making dance for the camera. She will also teach a movement workshop based on her New York training in modern dance and improvisation. The focus of the workshop is to find connections between the body and the mind, between the performer and the audience. The workshop starts with an "anatomical meditation," bringing awareness to the body's condition through imagery and breath. Continuing with a floor warm-up that incorporates simple stretches, the class moves into techniques in modern dance combined with basic ballet principles. Phrases are taught and improvised, bringing a keen awareness to intuitive versus deliberate movement. Focus on alignment and kinesthetics with concepts of clarity and intensity are explored as keys to a powerful performer.

ACORN Secret Bunker Uncovered

Knutley, TN – A young, well-spoken conservative student and his prostitute girlfriend have recently uncovered a secret bunker in the hills of western Tennessee that is believed to belong to the Assocation of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

Over the past several weeks, the couple has visited several ACORN offices, claiming to be a pimp and a prostitute, asking for advice from ACORN employees, who, instead of calling the police, offer help to the lying couple.

The pimp-and-whore couple stumbled upon the secret bunker accidentally while searching for a bag of crack for an upcoming routine.

Inside the bunker, the prostitute described dark hallways leading to dozens of rooms designed for dog-fighting, cock fighting, enhanced interrogation, something called “forced urbanization,” and Michael Moore movie screening, among other awful things.

The pimp-and-whore couple was stopped by a plump, shiny African American woman named Shawanda who demanded to know why they were there. In response, the pimp launched into his well-spoken routine about his whore girlfriend having tax problems. According to the poor young prostitute, Shawanda led them into a small, damp room with pentagrams scratched into the walls and forced them to dress in what the pretend-pimp called “African tribal clothing” and dance around a group of candles chanting about the benefits of a socialist economy.

Hours later, they were released by ACORN with free copies of the Communist Manifesto and 40 oz.’s of malt liquor.

George Gamblit, a senior advisor for the interest group Americans Against Government Control of Government (AAGCG), had this to say about ACORN’s secret underground bunker:

“Damn, really? Dog fighting and African tribal dress? Well I had no idea. It seems like somebody should do something about that. Are those kids okay? They’re not really poor? Oh, well that’s good.”

Merry Company

Honthorst's genre painting relates to the subject portrayed by his fellow Utrecht Caravaggisti. It depicts a provocative scene of a wanton student (the prodigal son?) in the company of two prostitutes and a procuress carrying an infant. The pages of an immense open folio on the table are brilliantly illuminated by candle-light as is the semi-nude torso of the theorbo-playing prostitute. One of the pages illustrates an older man and a nude child, most likely Cupid, beating a woman who holds a large book. The opposite page shows a Latin poem.
