Free Dance Workshop

1:00 p.m. onwards

Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center

University of the Philippines

Diliman, Quezon City

As part of the continuing celebration of the University of the Philippines' Centenary, the UP Vargas Museum hosts Paz Tanjuaquio's artist talk and free dance workshop on 18 February 2008. Tanjuaquio is a choreographer who is co-founder and artistic director of TOPAZ ARTS, Inc., a contemporary dance company based in the United States and established in 2000 with composer Todd Richmond. With a BA in Visual Arts from the University of California and an MFA in Dance from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Tanjuaquio integrates choreography and visual art with Richmond's original music and film. The result is a seamless collaboration of movement, music and images that is "intelligently conceived, image-filled" according to the New York Times.

For the Artist Talk "Dance and Film," Tanjuaquio will present TOPAZ ARTS' recent work on film and introduce their approach in making dance for the camera. She will also teach a movement workshop based on her New York training in modern dance and improvisation. The focus of the workshop is to find connections between the body and the mind, between the performer and the audience. The workshop starts with an "anatomical meditation," bringing awareness to the body's condition through imagery and breath. Continuing with a floor warm-up that incorporates simple stretches, the class moves into techniques in modern dance combined with basic ballet principles. Phrases are taught and improvised, bringing a keen awareness to intuitive versus deliberate movement. Focus on alignment and kinesthetics with concepts of clarity and intensity are explored as keys to a powerful performer.

ACORN Secret Bunker Uncovered

Knutley, TN – A young, well-spoken conservative student and his prostitute girlfriend have recently uncovered a secret bunker in the hills of western Tennessee that is believed to belong to the Assocation of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

Over the past several weeks, the couple has visited several ACORN offices, claiming to be a pimp and a prostitute, asking for advice from ACORN employees, who, instead of calling the police, offer help to the lying couple.

The pimp-and-whore couple stumbled upon the secret bunker accidentally while searching for a bag of crack for an upcoming routine.

Inside the bunker, the prostitute described dark hallways leading to dozens of rooms designed for dog-fighting, cock fighting, enhanced interrogation, something called “forced urbanization,” and Michael Moore movie screening, among other awful things.

The pimp-and-whore couple was stopped by a plump, shiny African American woman named Shawanda who demanded to know why they were there. In response, the pimp launched into his well-spoken routine about his whore girlfriend having tax problems. According to the poor young prostitute, Shawanda led them into a small, damp room with pentagrams scratched into the walls and forced them to dress in what the pretend-pimp called “African tribal clothing” and dance around a group of candles chanting about the benefits of a socialist economy.

Hours later, they were released by ACORN with free copies of the Communist Manifesto and 40 oz.’s of malt liquor.

George Gamblit, a senior advisor for the interest group Americans Against Government Control of Government (AAGCG), had this to say about ACORN’s secret underground bunker:

“Damn, really? Dog fighting and African tribal dress? Well I had no idea. It seems like somebody should do something about that. Are those kids okay? They’re not really poor? Oh, well that’s good.”

Merry Company

Honthorst's genre painting relates to the subject portrayed by his fellow Utrecht Caravaggisti. It depicts a provocative scene of a wanton student (the prodigal son?) in the company of two prostitutes and a procuress carrying an infant. The pages of an immense open folio on the table are brilliantly illuminated by candle-light as is the semi-nude torso of the theorbo-playing prostitute. One of the pages illustrates an older man and a nude child, most likely Cupid, beating a woman who holds a large book. The opposite page shows a Latin poem.

Visa Information

When you come to Peru to study Spanish at El Sol, you are essentially a tourist, so no student visa is necessary.

The tourist visa you receive upon entry will normally allow you to stay in Peru for as long as 90 days (there are also visas for 30-days and 60-days so you may need to request the one you require.) This may be extended for a limited time by paying US$1 per day. Another means to lengthen your visit is by crossing the border into Ecuador, Bolivia, or Chile and receiving a new 90-day tourist visa when you return.

Visa support letter (invitation)

Virtually all travellers to Russia need an entry visa, which is a document stuck into the applicants passport. The earliest arrival and the latest departure dates are indicated on the visa and must be observed. Students have to apply for the visa at a visa department of a Russian Consulate or Embassy in their home country. The school will provide participants with a necessary letter of invitation.

Tourist visa: For students wishing to study four weeks or less, we will arrange a simple invitation which entitles the student to apply for a tourist visa. The tourist visa is valid for one entry and for maximum 30 days In order to proceed, we need to have the following information:

  • Full name and last name
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Passport number and expiry date

A tourist visa cannot be prolonged.

Short-term student visa: Students wishing to study more than four weeks need to apply for a student visa. The student visa is valid for one entry and for maximum 90 days. In this case the invitation will be issued by the Russian Ministry of Interior Affairs. This procedure takes up to four weeks. We need the following documents and information about the student to file the student letter of invitation:

  • Clear passport copy with all relevant personal data (full name and first name, date and place of birth, nationality), passport number, passport issue and expiry dates, issuing authority and place of issue, any prolongation remarks. We need the copy either by fax or scanned and sent by e-mail. Please note that the passport must remain valid for six months beyond the Russian visa expiry date.
  • Exact length of stay (allow for some extra-days).
  • Place of application for the visa (city, country)
  • Permanent home address, phone/fax number
  • Place of work/study; job title, position, exact address of work or study, contact phone/fax

Long-term student visa: For students wishing to study more than 3 months (90 days) we will simply prolong the short-term student visa in Russia.

Visa application procedure

The visa-fee depends on the price policy of each consulate and on the applicant’s nationality. The following items are needed to file an application for a Russian visa:

  • Filled-in visa application form (PDF downloads available in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. US citizens need to fill in this form.
  • Visa support letter1)
  • One recent passport-sized foto
  • Valid passport
  • Health insurance policy (required only by some Russian consulates)
  • HIV test certificate (for stays longer than three months only)

1) Please note that the visa support letter (student visa only) must be supplied as original (no fax, no scan) to Russian consulates in the following countries: France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, The Netherlands. In this case, we send the visa support letter by airmail either to the booking agent, or - when little time is left - directly to the student (should the agent wish so).

For your convenience we provide samples for completing the application form for tourist and student visas.

Russian Consulates

Following websites will help locate the nearest Russian consulate:

Some embassies and consulates maintain their own website:

Whenever you deal with officials at a Russian consulate: Please stay friendly and polite, however lousy you think their services are. With a new generation of younger diplomats in charge, the situation is steadily improving in many places.

Visa registration

The school must register all students within three days after arrival at the local office of the Ministry of the Interior. Registration of a visa normally takes two working days. We always hand out passport and visa copies during the registration process. Students can use these copies as valid documents while changing money, traveller’s cheques (at some places), etc. Visa registration costs are included in the enrolment fee and payable together with the course and accommodation fees.

Visa period of validity and extension

A tourist visa is valid for maximum four weeks (30 days) and it is impossible to extend it. Tourist visas are only valid for one entry.

A short-term student visa is valid for one entry and maximum 3 months (90 days).

A long-term student visa is valid for maximum one year (365 days). Russian authorities require an HIV test for all visitors staying longer than three months.

Which Chinese schools can one legally get a visa for?

[Moderator's note: Currently it is only possible to legally get a visa for studying Chinese through a government approved school. For the best resource to find out which schools you can get a visa for, please consult the New official list of approved language schools from MOE topic in Learning Chinese. Discussions about which schools are government approved should be made in that topic. Any other more general questions about student visas should continue to be posted in Visa & Residency Issues.]

Is there any restriction as of which Chinese schools are good enough to be able to extend one's visa? I have a friend coming over from German, she plans to stay 4 months. Is there a better visa option besides Chinese classes?

General Information on visa

Depending on their nationality, foreigners may be obliged to obtain a visa prior to entering the Schengen Area. The German Consulate General in Sydney will accept visa applications from residents of New South Wales and Queensland. Basically there are two types of visas:
Short term Schengen visas that allow the holder to move freely throughout the entire Schengen Community for up to 90 days within a period of 6 months and provided that he or she does not intend to work. Schengen Visas must be applied for at the diplomatic of consular mission of the country of your main destination.
Long term Residence Permits that are issued by an individual member state. They are generally linked to a specific purpose (e.g. study, work) and entitle the holder to remain in this state's particular territory for an extended period of time. However, with a Residence Permit you can also travel the rest of the Schengen Area for up to three months.
The following will give you an overview of the various visa categories as well as the corresponding application forms. Should you have further questions or if you are in doubt which one to choose, please contact the passport and visa section.

The Baader Meinhof Complex

German cinema will be well-represented at the 81st annual Academy Awards, with six films produced, co-produced, or directed by German filmmakers up for an Oscar in 10 different categories. A historical drama about the left-wing Baader Meinhof gang that terrorized Germany in the 1970's could take home the flagship prize for Best Foreign Film, and Werner Herzog received his first ever Oscar nomination.

The Baader Meinhof Complex, produced by the Los Angeles-based German heavyweight Bernd Eichinger, has not yet enjoyed a wide US release but has already impressed critics worldwide. It has also sold 2.4 million tickets since it opened in Germany in September 2008. The film stars Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others) and Moritz Bleibtreu (Run Lola Run) as Ulrike Meinhof and Andreas Baader, who led a group of student revolutionaries in increasingly violent attacks that culminated in bombings, hijacking and murders.

Complex will compete for the Best Foreign Language Film against the German-French-Israeli co-production “Waltz With Bashir”. The animated documentary about a young Israeli's soldier's experience in the 1968 War with Lebanon already edged out Complex to win a Golden Globe this year.

Director Stephen Daldry's (The Hours) take on Bernhard Schlink's novel The Reader is up for five awards. The drama about a teenager's affair with an older woman who is later tried for crimes she committed as a concentration camp guard is up for best picture and direction as well as awards for its screenplay (David Hare) and cinematography (Chris Menges and Roger Deakins). Kate Winslet has been nominated as best leading actress for her role as the concentration camp guard.

Werner Herzog's documentary about his trip to Antarctica Encounters at the End of the World earned the legendary German director the nod for best documentary picture. One of the most prolific figures in modern cinema, many of Herzog's most critically successful films, including 2005's Grizzly Man, have been passed over by the Academy Awards, making this his first nomination.

Two short films from Germany will also compete for Oscars. Auf der Strecke (On the Line), which won a student Oscar last year is in the running for best live action short film, as is Spielzeugland (Toyland).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees on January 22, 2009 and will announce the winners during the gala ceremony on February 22.

Permanent Visas

'Permanent' or 'resident' visas allow the holder to remain in Australia indefinitely. Migrant and some humanitarian entrants are granted permanent visas. Holders of permanent visas are 'Australian residents' for the purposes of section 7(2) of the SSAct.
Resident status

While visas are the most common evidence of resident status, you may come across some old style visas. These old visas can be imprints or stick-in labels different in size, shape and colour from the present ones. On these visas, resident status was evidenced with any of the three stamps below. The stamps, which appear on travel documents including passports, indicate that the holder was granted permanent resident status on the date shown on the stamp.

Permanent Residence Stamps

Persons who are granted permanent resident status or citizenship in Australia can obtain from DIAC a 'certificate of evidence of residence status' if they have no other proof of their status. The information in the certificate is current only at the date of issue.

The recession has a negative effect on many aspect of our lives, but this is the natural way of the economy to bring order to itself after years of frivolous spending by the common consumer. It is always darkest before the dawn, that good old idiom says, but that isn’t necessarily true if you act on time.

In recent news an article covered the fact that a lot of backpackers from the UK and Germany are rushing down to Australia in 2009. If you are amongst those people willing to spend the next year in Australia, then there isn’t a better time to get your Australian visa and book your flight.

Obtaining a visa might take you between 2 days and two weeks, depending on the approach you chose to obtain one. You can do it by yourself, however if you need it in a hurry it is better to go through an agent, since it will cut most of the hassle and you application will be processed faster.

Currently you can book a ticket from London to Sydney on British Airways’s site for as low as 518GBP. This will be the price you pay if you book now for any date of the period ~01/05 – 15/06/2009. This will soon change, however you have the great opportunity to book a cheap in the next few days. Airlines will not be able to sell low cost tickers for much longer so this summer is you chance to book a low cost flight from and to Australia.

It is a great time for working holiday makers from Australia to travel to the United Kingdom and for UK backpackers to jump over to Australia.

Get the UK visa application right

The amount of evidence that is needed to persuade the British embassy that the visa application is real can be over whelming, get the evidence wrong or provide incorrect evidence to support the visa application and the visa will be refused. Many people are refused as a result of the strength of the evidence provided at the time of the UK visa application.

Visa to the UK Service

We offer an online Visa to the UK application form, after we receive your information, out staff will contact you to inform you if a visa will be issued for your Thai partner to travel to the UK

Have you been refused a UK Visa?

Been refused a visa to the UK for you Thai partner?

If you’re Thai partner has been refused a Visa to the UK. There are two options open to you.
Some UK visa refusals you are able to appeal against and others you have to reapply for the visa.
When your Thai partner is refused a Visa to the UK, the Embassy officer will indicate the reasons that the UK visa has been refused. It is important to understand, whatever reasons given in the refusal letter, if there are no changes made to the UK sponsor and Thai partner’s situations, then the Visa will be refused yet again.

On many occasions UK Visas have been refused even though the Thai and UK Citizen meet all the criteria but because the application was badly collated or incorrect information were handed in to the British embassy at the time of the application.

Reappy or Appeal ?

If you have been refused a Visa to the UK we can help ensure that when we reapply or appeal, the visa is issued. We will inform you of what the UK sponsor and Thai partner must do before making the new visa application

China, India to implement Antitrust laws

China will enforce Antitrust laws (anti monopoly laws or competition laws) from Friday, August 1st, while India will put the same laws into place by the end of this year. Antitrust laws are expected to delay or thwart high-profile cross-border mergers and acquisitions, in the burgeoning economies, lawyers and business executives warned the Financial Times.

China and India both will implement Antitrust laws based on the European Union model, which will essentially prohibit agreements or practices that restrict free trade and competition between business entities. The law will help control monopoly practices by firms which might use predatory pricing, price gouging, refusal to deal etc. The aim of the law which is to promote fair competition by supervising mergers and acquisitions of large corporations, including some joint ventures, is a cause for concern of many multinationals in the region.

In China, deals involving companies with a combined global turnover of US$1.5bn – and where at least two of the parties each have turnover in China of US$60m – are likely to have to file for approval. China already has ambitious plans to sue Microsoft’s pricing and the dominance of its products on the Chinese market.

India’s thresholds are equally complicated, but draft guidance suggests that they could be set even lower in many cases. India’s beefed-up monopoly laws allow the new Competition Commission of India up to 210 days to assess merger filings – far longer than in the EU or US.

Research Studies

Research StudiesStatus of Ganoderma Lucidum in United States: Ganoderma Lucidum as an Anti-inflammatory Agent

The status of herbs has recently changed in the United States with the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). This law created a new category called Dietary Supplements which includes herbs. The act declares these substances are not food additives nor are they drugs. It allows manufactures to publish more complete directions for use than previously allowed including warnings, contraindications, and side effects. The act also allows manufacturers to publish limited information regarding the benefits in the form of Statements of Nutritional Support as well as Structure and Function Claims.
Alzheimers Disease is primarily an old age disorder in which competent individuals become agitated, uncomprehending, with profound loss of cognitive function finally requiring continued and complete care. In the United States it is the fourth leading cause of death. At present, the choice of therapeutic or preventive drugs for use in Alzheimers disease is limited and the best only slow the progress of the disease for about 40 weeks. Recent research has discovered evidence of inflammation in the brain of Alzheimers patients and unless inflammation is present there is little evidence of neurodegeneration, even in patients with profuse amyloid B-peptide deposition and neurofibrillary tangles. Prospective and retrospectively collected data on men and women suggest that use of non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs is associated with reduced risk of Alzheimers disease. This research heightens the importance of the ancient reports where Ganoderma lucidum was praised for its effect of increasing memory and preventing forgetfulness in old age reported in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing vol. 1 as early as 456-536 AD. Research on mice using orally or topically administered Ganoderma lucidum provides evidence that Ganoderma lucidum has anti-inflammatory activity. This pharmacological activity may provide the basis for its activity on memory in old age, although we do not know as yet that Ganoderma lucidum can enter the brain and exert antiinflammatory activity. In cardiovascular research, it has been found that aspirin ingestion can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease. The possibility that it is antiinflammatory activity of aspirin that can provide benefit in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease is suggested by the finding that higher levels of C-reactive protein in the plasma which is an acute phase marker for systemic inflammation is a predictor for increased risk of cardiovascular disease. These studies on inflammation provide important evidence that warrants further study of Ganoderma lucidum and its possible role in mitigating these two devastating diseases.
Another important event more specific for Ganoderma was the incorporation of the Ganoderma International Research Institute in New York in 1993 for the purpose of fostering international scientific and medical research on Ganoderma, setting standards of quality for related products and to promote popular awareness and appropriate use of Ganoderma.
Research on Ganoderma in the United States is not extensive. The major reason is the lack of research funds available. The interest of the public in herbal medicine is growing, the sales of herbal products is increasing yearly, with little effect on research funding.
Ecological studies along the Savannah river in South Carolina by Chen et al., (1993) identified Ganoderma as the first long-spore species in the genus to associate with oak. More recently Chenand Hu (1994) reported three successful strategies for obtaining monokaryons in Ganoderma species. To my knowledge the major producer of fruiting body Ganoderma lucidum in the United States at present is Organotech of San Antonio.
In clinical studies Chang (1994) at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reported that applications of Ganoderma should be studied and considered for (1) chemoprophylaxis of cancer in individuals at high risk for developing cancer (2) adjuvent use in the prevention of metastasis or recurrence of cancer (3) palliation of cancer related cachexia and pain and (4) adjunctive use with concurrent chemotherapy to reduce side-effects, maintain leukocyte counts and allow a more optimal dosing of chemo or radio therapeutics. In a very interesting report Chang (1993) addressed the question of proper dose of Ganoderma for therapy. Since studies of human dosage were traditional and empiric a dose range was calculated using this data and pharmacokinetic principals. The calculations suggested that a (1) Ganoderma dried fruit body dose of 0.5 to 1 g per day for health maintenance (2) 2 to 5 g per day if there is chronic fatigue, stress, auto immune, or other chronic health problems (3) 5 to 10 g per day for serious illness.
Of great interest has been the recent reports from the United States indicating a possible central role for inflammation in the development of such diverse diseases as Alzheimers Disease and Cardiovascular disease. This research has the possibility of linking some of the historical uses of Ganoderma in promoting longevity with contemporary Western scientific theory. The provocative connections are: (1) Ganoderma was used to prevent memory loss in old age (2) Ganoderma is anti-inflammatory, (3) inflammation is involved in the development of Alzheimers disease (4) Alzheimers disease appears to be ameliorated by chronic antiinflammatory use.
(1) Ganoderma and old age: The ancient Chinese text Shen Nong Ben Jing volume 1 from about the year 500 states that Ganoderma lucidum is useful for enhancing vital energy, increasing thinking faculty and preventing forgetfulness. It can refresh the body and mind, delay aging and enable one to live long. It stabilizes ones mental condition (Mizuno 1996). The importance of retaining memory into old age probably lies in the Taoist belief that sickness was caused by past transgressions and that the patient had to remember the transgressions, record them and destroy the record. This belief placed a strong emphasis on memory in the maintenance of health and longevity.
(2) Antiinflammatory: In research in mice Stavinovah et al. (1991, 1996) found Ganoderma lucidum to be potent antiinflammatory agent. The water extract of the fruiting body was active orally against both carrageenan induced inflammation and croton oil induced inflammation. The ethyl acetate extract was active as an antiinflammatory agent both orally and topically. The active compound was isolated and identified. This compound is equivalent in antiinflammatory activity to hydrocortisone. It does not show the typical side effects of steroids such as thymic involution nor appear to cause gastropathy which is the major side effect of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as aspirin.
(3) Inflammation and Alzheimers disease: A number of indicators of active inflammation have been found in the Alzheimers diseased brain. Unless inflammation is present there is no notable neurodegeneration or Alzheimers signs and symptoms even in the presence of extensive neurofibrillary tangles and Amyloid B-peptide plaque deposition (Rogers 1995).
(4) Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs in Alzheimers disease: Researchers in the United States and Canada have found that ingestion of non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs can slow the progress of the disease (McGeer and Rogers 1992). In a report by Corrida et al. (1996) reported on findings on 1417 man and 648 women from Baltimore Longitudinal Study of aging which is 37 year multidisciplinary study of normal aging. The preliminary results suggest that use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs is associated with decreased incidence of Alzheimers disease.
In studying incidence of cardiovascular disease, Ricker et al. (1997) measures C-reactive protein, an acute phase reactant used as a marker for systemic inflammation, in plasma. They found that baseline plasma concentration of C-reactive protein predicts the risk of future myocardial infarction and stroke. The reduction of risk associated with aspirin appears to be directly related to the level of C-reactive protein, suggesting that antiinflammatory agents may have benefits in preventing cardiovascular disease. The increase risk was independent of lipid related and non-lipid related cardiovascular factors. Masari (1997) felt that the time has come to reexamine that pathogenetic components of these disease to identify patients who would benefit from particular therapies.
Considering these recent findings, research on Ganoderma as a potential useful antiinflammatory for a long term use as a prevention of disease appears warranted.

Studies in the United States state that it is found that aggressive teenagers, the parts of the brain linked to reward that the amygdala and ventral striatum- light up when the teens view a video of someone inflicting pain. I already know about the effects of bullying but finding out why it happens is important too.BULLY, SCHOOLYARD BULLY, BULLIES
